For the German artist Max Beckmann, drypoint, with its burr yielding a rich, velvety line, became a preferred printmaking technique. Beckmann in the 1920s, at the height of his worldly success, worked in a manner of stark objectivity to depict the formal gravity of his friend and colleague, the museum director Georg Swarzenski.
